Beehive Financial Services celebrates:
The Beehive group of companies was established in 1992 when a group of business leaders, church leaders and welfare leaders got together to address the high unemployment rate amongst the people living in the rural area of Lydenburg in Mpumalanga, South Africa.
Beehive started off as a job creation project, facilitating skills training as provided by training providers to unemployed people.
In 1994 the focus changed to enterprise development and Beehive become one of the first institutions to be accredited as a Local Business Service Centre to support small business development.
In 1996 Beehive partnered with the Get Ahead Foundation and Entrepreneurial Development South Africa to administer access to finance to mainly groups of women in survivalist businesses and emerging contractors participating in low cost housing projects.
Beehive received its first financial support from the Swedish International Development Agency and the Development Bank of Southern Africa.
In 2001 Beehive committed itself to be:
Wessel Venter – Chief Executive Officer |
|
The success of BEEHIVE can be attributed to the hard work and perseverance of Wessel Venter. Like Martin Luther King, he had a dream. A vision to uplift and educate the disadvantaged people in our community and in the country and in doing so, empower them to manage their own resources to their maximum benefit. BEEHIVE Financial Services (Pty) Ltd was the outcome of that dream. Through his initiative, we have a stable company with credible and reputable product partners and an excellent entourage of investors! Wessel heads our company in every sense of the word. With his advice, knowledge of and experience in interpersonal relations and business management, BEEHIVE will never falter. |
|
Johan de Klerk – Chief Operational Officer |
|

After working at our company for a mere six months, Johan proved to be worthy of the trust and faith that Management laid on his shoulders. He was incorporated to help take BEEHIVE to the next level and make us a worthy competitor in the finance industry, especially concerning our systems and processes. Johan believes in the vision to take BEEHIVE to the next level, and because of that, he is successful in all his attempts and has become an irreplaceable part of our company! He has one weakness though. For a cookie or two, Johan will most probably refrain to begging! |
Sonnica Venter – Operations Manager |
|
|
Most of our processes have to pass by Sonnica’s office for approval, advice and support. She is in charge of our administrative-, loans- and personnel divisions. Her long list of references and years of service only contributed to making her multi skilled in the actual sense of the word. She is exactly what her name sounds like. A bundle of sunshine that keeps the whole office motivated with her bubbling laughter and friendly smiles. She has a caring word for each person that enters her office, and everyone knows that no matter how busy, Sonnica will always set her work aside to lend a helping hand to those in need. For this, she is dearly loved by all our customers. |
Lucia Hladik – Financial Manager |

Our head of the accounts department is a small and feisty woman called Lucia Hladik. She controls her department with a firm but caring hand, which is exactly what you would expect from the manager of the most important division in our company. She ensures that any mistakes or problems regarding clients’ accounts are solved immediately. Lucia has a wide vocabulary, but the phrase “It’s impossible!” is none existent according to her. With her logical and reasonable demeanor she calms everyone around her and sees problems only as an opportunity to search for and create more solutions! |
Charmaine Oelofse – Systems and IT Manager |
|
As our IT Manager, Charmaine sees to it that all our IT systems are installed and in good working order. Any hic-ups in the system are solved immediately, which is the benefit of having a hands-on manager in our IT Department. Charmaine has the ability to make any amount of work seem possible. Contrary to the proverb, she can make any mountain seem like a small heap of sand. She has proven, on more than one occasion that she is able to do large amounts of work within a certain time-frame. Whether it be ten or 200 tasks, by the end of the day she will have feedback on all of it! |

The Beehive group of companies are committed to:
1. Improving the living conditions of people.
Client Story: Incremental Housing Loan
Lina Lucy Mathethwa - Mashishing, Lydenburg

"My name is Lina Lucy Mathethwa. I live in a two-roomed tin shack with my four children. I am employed as a house mother at Estralita School, a boarding school for the disabled. After working there for 12 years, I am now a supervisor. I am divorced, but my former husband pays maintenance for the children. My children are still at school and I'm the bread winner in the family. We currently live in a tin shack.
I heard about Indlu from Ikwekwezi FM in December 2002. I first went to a building-material supplier to get a quote for material in order to build the house I wanted. I had saved R10 000, which was not enough for the house that I wanted. I went to Indlu in January 2004 to borrow R15 000 to add to my savings. I started building my seven-roomed house from scratch. After approving my loan, Indlu paid money directly to the building-material supplier. Building material was delivered soon thereafter. I used my savings to pay a local builder and buy additional materials. I plan to apply for another Indlu loan so that I could plaster the house and have a decent roof.
I am very happy with the loan. I can't wait to move into my new house which will definitely be more homely and safer for me and my children."
2. Increasing the income for low-income people.
Client Story: Productive housing
Rainy Pascalis Van Rooyen – Kellysville, Lydenburg

“My name is Rainy van Rooyen. I live in a four roomed house with my elderly unemployed mother and my younger sister. Although I am employed I realized that we needed to increase our monthly income and I therefore contacted Indlu for a loan.
With the loan obtained from Indlu I was able to build three spacious rental rooms with a fully developed bathroom (shower, bath, toilet and a handbasin). I have been able to rent out these rooms since April 2006 to people employed by the mines and government departments. Because of the quality of my rooms I always have a waiting list for people wanting to rent from me.
Indlu helped me to increase my income and to increase the value of my property. When I retire, I will at least have an additional income to live on.”
3. Reducing the vulnerability of people with limited income.
Client Story: Insurance Products
Sarah Mbuje Maisane – Matibidi Village, Graskop

“My name is Sarah Maisane. I am a single parent of 33 years and live with my 2 kids.
Having all the financial commitments a single parent has to face with, with a very low salary, I thought it is beyond reach to build a home of my own. I applied for a loan at Indlu and was financed immediately to construct the house. Two months later a strong tornado cut across the Leroro Village blowing away roofs, demolishing walls of houses and schools.
Unfortunately we were the victims of this tornado, my whole roof was blown off. To deal with the damage I had to increase my loan. Since then I have taken out a policy from Beehive Financial Services that covers me against these risks, that is the AIG Disaster Policy. It indeed gives me peace of mind.
And now I have a peace of mind, thanks to AIG disaster policy, says Sarah”
4. Ensuring safe and accessible money.
Client Story: Wizzit Card
Sipho Hlongwa – Mashishing, Lydenburg

Sipho Hlongwa is working for Louhen Financial Services Lydenburg. He has this to say “I was introduced to the Wizzit card by Beehive staff. I became interested and it did not take me even 5 minutes to get the card. Yes, no queues, no waiting, no hassle, and at only R40.00. I have been particularly impressed by the following functions that I have been able to access through my wizzit card. I am saving, I am withdrawing and transferring money, I use it to buy from shops and can access cash at the point of sale. I must say comparatively speaking it outclasses many other cards in terms of how, when, where and how much it costs you. I cannot keep it as my secret and has therefore introduced it to five other people, who are extremely happy with the card.”
5. Encouraging a culture of saving for the future.
Client Story: Savings
Solomon Ngomane

“Saving can save you in times of chaos” these are words echoed by Solomon Ngomane. He continues to say: “I am employed by Ellerine’s (A furniture store) and have worked there for years. I have a bank account with one of the banks, just to have my salary deposited in it, and then withdraw it all.
Beehive Financial Services agents invited me for a talk on Beehive Sacco savings. I was taken up by their presentation on why savings is necessary. I committed myself to save between R200-R500 per month. I have succeeded to keep to my commitment.
But at the end of May 2007 I had so many misfortunes resulting from family deaths and other problems that I was left penniless. I did not have money for transport, electricity and childrens pocket money. I remembered that I have savings with Beehive Savings and Credit Cooperative and those savings rescued me from this terrible situation. From now on henceforth I want to increase my savings and save for the unforeseen.”
To date the Beehive group has disbursed 70 million SARand to more than 18 500 clients of which 82% are women and 87% are rural based.

LAUNCH: August 2008
On the 29th and 30th of August, we launched our very first Beehive Kiosk in the Priceclub store in Malmesbury!
After months of negotiations, we were finally able to make this dream come true!
With the help of Brian Shands, Wouter Swart, Oswald Johannes, Tessa Venter, Charl Plaut, Angela Snyman and our very own Bee in the store, Letessha Sheldon, we had two very successful days! We created an awareness about our products amongst all the clients who entered the store, and we even wrote 9 packages for clients up front!
Priceclub Malmesbury was very helpful, and we would like to thank Rudi vd Mescht and his excellent team for their friendly help and service! Without them, the launch would not have been as successful!
If anyone in the Malmesbury district is interested in our products, you can contact Letessha Sheldon at 022 482 2925 or pay her a visit in the Priceclub Store!
